Understanding the Populism with Philosophy

I shared a quotation in a group messaging last week: “I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” – Socrates. It is a group that we usually text each other in English. However, we are texting each other in Turkish when the matters are about this kind of topics. Thereupon, one of the group members said: “But, ignorance, beliefs and obedience prevent people to think”. That was a good answer which was opening the door of philosophy slightly. I replied to this sentence which boiled the spring within me: “There is not an aura in our age to research about the factors of ignorance, beliefs and obedience. Thinking is like luxury and insanity.

The reason that I started the column with this entry is about “populism” which has been widely used within the political scene in the recent times. The way of how the populism are embraced, is not different from the point of first paragraph. The numbers of the people who want to investigate and demonstrate the reasons of the generation of populism, are very few. When the people constantly talk and concern about the populism without an analytical perpspective, it is so hard for them to be out of the populist paradigm. However, instead of constantly speaking about who are populists and who follow them, learning the dynamics and developments, experiences and manipulations which get the people closer to the populist discourses, will be profound regarding the philosophical understanding. It will not only be a profound understanding, but also proper to create lucid channels of thoughts which will help us to get out of the swirls throughout from the short term to long term. By all means, it is also necessary to note that what is “what” while carrying out this process.

Lets turn back to our messages in the group and see what another friend wrote: “I am reading Aristotle and will send you an answer tomorrow”. Tomorrow arrived but there was no answer. We do not know why she did not send it but if we are curious about it, we may learn it. If we are curious, we can eagerly examine the factors of the generation of populism at the same time. Critics of populism without considering its essential dynamics will only be useful for the actors who have been rising with purely and simply populist discourses on the national and international platforms. Geçen hafta bir grup mesajlaşması içerisinde bir alıntı paylaştım: “Ben kimseye hiçbir şey öğretemem, sadece onların düşünmelerini sağlayabilirim” – Socrates. Çoğu zaman İngilizce yazışmalarımızın olduğu bir gruptu. Grup mesajlaşmalarında bu gibi durumlarda ise Türkçe’ye dönüyorduk. Socrates’in sözü üzerine grup üyelerinden biri şöyle dedi: “Ama cehalet, inançlar ve biat insanların düşünmelerini engelliyor”. İyi bir cevaptı. Felsefenin kapısını aralayan türden. İçimdeki pınarın kaynamasına sebep olan bu cümleye şöyle bir cevap yazdım: “Cehaletin, inancın ve biatın sebeplerini araştıracak ruh yok çağımızda, düşünmek lüks, delilik!”.

Bu yazıya böyle bir paragrafla giriş yapmamın sebebi, siyaset arenalarında son dönemde en çok kullanılan kavramlardan biri olan “popülizm”. İçinden geçtiğimiz bu zaman diliminde dillerden düşmeyen popülizm kavramının ele alınış biçimi de, yukarıdaki paragrafta anlatılmak istenenden pek farklı değil açıkçası. Popülizmin oluşum nedenlerini derinlemesine incelemek ve göstermek isteyenlerin sayısı epey az. Popülizme analitik yaklaşma çabası olmadan onu dert edinip, aşağı popülizm yukarı popülizm diyenlerin gerçek anlamda popülist bir paradigma içinden çıkabilmeleri çok zor. Halbuki, sürekli bir şekilde kimin popülizmi yaşadığını ve yaşattığını anlatmaktansa, hangi gelişme ve dinamiklerin, hangi yaşantı ve manipülasyonların kitleleri popülist söylemlere yakınlaştırdığını öğrenmek felsefi anlamda daha derinliklidir. Sadece derinlikli olmakla kalmayıp, kısa vadeden uzun vadeye, içine girdiğimiz girdaplardan çıkmamızı sağlayacak berrak düşünce kanallarını yaratmaya da çok elverişlidir. Bunu yaparken elbette neyin “ne” olduğunu da bir kenara not etmek gerekiyor.

Yeniden mesajlaşmaların gerçekleştiği gruba dönecek olursak, aynı grup içerisindeki bir başka arkadaş şöyle yazdı: “Şimdi Aristo okuyorum cevabımı yarın vereceğim”. Yarın oldu cevap gelmedi. Sebebini bilmiyoruz ama merak edersek belki öğrenebiliriz. Merak edersek popülizmi yaratan sebepleri de üşenmeden inceleyebiliriz. Popülizm eleştirisini, kendi öz dinamiklerine inmeden yapmak, sadece ve sadece popülist söylemlerle uluslararası ve ulusal platformlarda yükselmeye devam eden aktörlere yarayacaktır.
